It seems that the narrator is telling us that Lizzie's overstating the case more than a little. "Gilding the Lily" to use a common expression. So we have a conflicting situation here: Lizzie's laughter and making light of it all, or an early example of pride and prejudice in one sentence? Is the narrator asking us to make judgements or take sides already? Or is she just keeping us a little off balance? A two-pipe problem.(-:
