Who among us have not complained ungallantly to a dear old friend our ugly, private thoughts?
Yes people do speak to a close freind in such a way, since the close friend can be relied on to accept the more unkind thoughts and not relay them to everyone. But Darcy speaks loud enough to be heard, in a public place and in the hearing of the very woman he was being rude abuot. People generally dont do THAT, unless they really intend to be rude or hurtful. It is IMO to Liz's credit that she didnt take serious offence but made a joke about it. And teh Meryton people had plenty to dislike in Darcy from his conduct at teh Assembly in general even witout hearing of a specific insult to Eliz.
