When Darcy first entered the room at Meryton, he made a good first impression:
Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien, and the report, which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance, of his having ten thousand a year.
I think it would be rather awkward to walk into a room, and then a few minutes later, everyone is talking about how much money you have. It is likely that Darcy heard the talk in circulation. And that probably caused him to avoid people and wish not to have anything to do with them.
Of course, that does not completely excuse his behavior. But I can see why the behavior and talk of the Meryton Assembly would only confirm Darcy's prejudice against them.
