When I first read P&P, I was surprised at how early in the novel that Darcy begins to fall for Elizabeth. For some reason, I thought that it would occur much later in the book, and be a huge surprise for both Elizabeth and the reader. But no, it's Chapter 6 and Darcy begins to show an interest in Elizabeth.
I also find it interesting that Elizabeth, who prides herself in being a great reader of character, does not notice Darcy's regard. I think that Darcy's snub behavior at Meryton has already prejudiced her against him.
It is also interesting that JA, who normally employs a limited omniscient point-of-view, allows the reader to become aware of Darcy's regard for Elizabeth. It now makes me read the scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth differently, knowing that I know something that Elizabeth does not.
