…is entirely a matter of chance.
The conversation between Charlotte and Lizzy in Ch 6 shows that the friends are reasonably well matched in argument. (That is why they are good friends I suppose). So is Charlotte a cynic? Or is she intelligently realistic? If we discount the “entirely” as a conversational hyperbole we are made to think, yes of course there is an element of chance; the question is how much.
By now marriage seems to be a potential theme in this book. And we have a character early in the novel making such a devastatingly unromantic statement about it.
So, is chance going to play a big part as we go along?
