I'm sure Elizabeth too was polite enough, but as she did not like them either, she was presumably glad to be "restored...to the enjoyment of all her original dislike"---while still being polite to them!! (She does rejoice in the absurd, after all!) I'm pretty sure that people knew then as people do now when politeness (or professionalism) is mostly just 'proper' behavior, even when we really don't like or admire the person. We generally know when we are truly liked or enjoyed and when we are sincerely welcomed by someone. I think it's so fun to read some of this Netherfield interaction because we pretty well know what they think of each other, in spite of being "all politeness"!! And it's so universal a scenario---my goodness, most of us participate in and observe something akin to this every single day! (I wonder what JA would create out of the current rage for 'political correctness'!?)
