I do not mean that Elizabeth regularly wanders over the fields and such (like they depict her in P&P2). The closest I can come to explaining my impression is that, while she doesn't eschew things such as carriages, she isn't squeamish about getting dirty and exerting herself if need be. It's not so much that she actively pursues those types of activities, but she will not be overly nice about these kinds of things. I would imagine, too, that the term "tomboy", or whatever equivalent was used back then, had a different meaning from what it does today. I hope that helps explain what was going on in my head. :-)
