would be considered a "nerd" in these days, of course! ;-) I hope you don't mean to suggest that intellectual pursuits are more masculine than feminine or that they were considered to be more masculine? I must disagree on both counts. Austen states that Elizabeth was lively and was capable of walking 3 miles if need be, but not that she considered herself above the so called "feminine pursuits" such as delicate needlework or playing a musical instruments, etc.. She read books, but she wasn't glued to them (I neither deserve such praise nor such censure).
