I had often wondered if Jane intended the bit of parallel between the passage that you cite and the piece in Ch. 11 where Mr. Darcy suggests that Miss Bingley and Elizabeth might be choosing to walk around together because they know that they will "appear to best advantage" and "he can admire them" from his seat. It has struck me in the past that he might be slyly echoing Elizabeth's flippant opinion from earlier that same day that people walk together in order to be looked at and to form a picturesque to please a viewer.
If she did intend it (and I put very little past her, clever girl) I think it is a very quick and subtle way to show that Mr. Darcy pays attention to the little offhand things that Elizabeth says.
