in consequence of the missive, Darcy and Bingley.., penned by Jim Morris
that conscription to the Militia could only come into force in the event of an actual invasion - which hasn't happened in the time frame of the book and which history tells us did not happen in Jane Austen's lifetime or at any time since up to today. Clearly neither gentleman has felt inclined to volunteer for the Militia. Perhaps they are not the sort of vain individuals who want to parade about in fancy uniforms without having to risk their lives fighting, unless there is an invasion?
