in consequence of the missive, here is but one thought -, penned by mikeB in Japan
... that Bingley and Darcy are fully equal in their relationship. There's not the slightest evidence that Darcy was involved at all in the rental of Netherfield; there's never been the slightest deference to Darcy that we see (indeed, there's a case to be made that Darcy came unwillingly to Netherfield and resents the community in part because Bingley's precipitous removal to the neighborhood drew him out of his usual haunts); he frankly says things that could be construed as uncomplimentary to Darcy (let him go to bed, then!).
And as to gossip, let's suppose the conversation has been complimentary to this bunch of hicks, especially the dominant hicks at the top of this pile. Darcy is already displeased at being dragged way out here to the boondocks, and now he has to hear these people not just accepted as subjects for conversation, but maybe even given some praise!
I don't agree that he participated in any gossip except to maybe respond to ambient conversation that he'd rather not be troubled with.
