Because Mr Darcy is said to have been admired half the evening and scorned the other half, and his slighting Elizabeth happened about two hours and a half after their arrival. Was it at the half-time?
Anyway he is said (by the omniscient narrator, not the rumour) to have declined several young ladies introduction. This had necessarily an impact.
