..maybe, unwittingly, the dislike situation, by telling her story amongst her fiends? Nothing spreads quicker than gossip and her friends would be with families and neighbours. The tale of Darcy "mortifying" her pride would grow rapidly in the telling, as all rumours are prone to do. By the end of the evening: His character was decided" (not that of his party, just Darcy's own). He was thus discounted as a possible target for the marriage stakes in a single evening. Taking things into account, he actually did little except not be totally social really, would things have been different if she had just laughed it off to herself and not made a bit of a meal of it?
I have to wonder? (-:
