Early in Ch 4 :
This is terrific. With reference to superficial judgments itís a clichť that women are judged on their looks (and er, attributes). But here Elizabeth turns it sharply onto the male sex and has an ironic dig at whether good looks in men have anything at all do do with character.
We donít know much about Lizzy at this stage except that that her father thinks she is quick witted and she has a playful disposition. We donít know if she is pretty, what her age is (or indeed whether she is older than Mary or Kitty). But this conversation with her older sister marks her out has being intelligent.
I am already taken with her.
