I did not get that impression. I thought Darcy was being snappy with his friend especially after the "stupid manner" remark. And to follow that up with a remark on Jane's beauty could be construed as a hint of trying to suppress jealousy. I mean the way he said it sounded like "I would have danced but you seem to have monopolised the only girl worth dancing with".
Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree but that is what it sounds like Jane has caught Darcy's eye. And why not? We learn early in the next chapter (all be it from a biased source) that she is five times as pretty as anybody else there.
