However, I always wondered what on earth prompts Darcy to be quite so rude! Yes, he doesn't exactly want to be at that assembly, but surely, as a gentleman of some consequence, he endured a number of such balls before and, presumably, with more grace? Why does he burst out with the iinfamous "slighted by other men" remark? Is he so bored and thus, out of humour? Or does Bingley unknowingly interrupt some train of thought Darcy is anxious to think out till the end?
