Chapter 3 : "You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner".
But, amidst all other signs of pride and conceit, how could this alloy, that had been heard only by his friend and by Elizabeth, could save him from general reprobation?
He was really proud and conceited, as show his remarks in chapter 4; and his mitigating circumstance was unlikely to be known.
Nevertheless I find an excess in the crowd reaction; in fact, in the superlative.
