in consequence of the missive, Hume/ North of England/ Netherfield, penned by Thérèse
...by county, is above Gloucester, Warwicksire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire . Below these is Southern England, thus Herefordshire is decidedly in the south by some way. The north was also famous for pottery and porcelein (Staffordshire and the Potteries) and a major area for the cotton trade. The steel industry, arms making, industry, engineering coal mining and shipbuilding all took a major role in the north of England. No surprise then that a wealthy man came from the north. The said North also reaches all the way to Scotland.
To clarify further, Hertfordshire lay in a notherly direction from London, but was a fair distance from the official north of England.
