I fully agree with you, though I had never taken this first chapter as a whole. What a good idea, this group read!
In French my preferred novel author is Balzac and he is more specialized in long and precise descriptions. I like his descriptions because I know all what I want to know of the setting after, they are accurate and pleasant to read, but the comparison with Jane Austen is striking : she has so much dynamics... Although her novels were much more "worked" than Balzac's, who would write being paid by the line, and whose main work, La Comédie humaine, comprises... 81 novels (some short, most not).
