Never mind the the opening sentence, I have always felt that the whole first chapter is one of the most brilliant instances of scene-setting in English literature.
At the end of this short opening chapter we know about the members and state of the Bennet family, can guess at the impact of a single wealthy man coming into the heighbourhood and the characters of the mother and father are forming in our minds into real people, just through a brilliantly conceived dialogue.
Anyone in doubt of the fact that JA was a unique genius should read just this short chapter.
