Interesting post   Written by Louise H (10/29/2011 8:55 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Anne's Courage (Long), penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

I hadn't thought before that Anne's comments to Captain Harville could have been targeted at FW. I assumed she was saying what she would have said whether he was there or not -- the truth as she saw it. How amazingly quick-witted she'd have to be to pull that off!

Anne's courage in Bath is something I too was struck by this time -- especially in light of earlier discussions about whether Anne should or could have been more encouraging when she first re-met FW at Uppercross. I'd always assumed before this group read that Anne was trapped by social convention (whereas FW was appallingly unkind in ignoring her). I was intrigued by suggestions here that FW might have been responding to Anne's coolness toward him. I think her forwardness in Bath indicates that she might with propriety have been more friendly in Uppercross. I wonder if we are meant to conclude that Anne regretted her coolness herself.
