Mr Elliot does not seem to have been a prize as a husband: "He was very unkind to his first wife. They were wretched together. But she was too ignorant and giddy for respect". Mrs Clay does not strike me as ignorant or giddy, or inclined to overlook her own interest - I think being set up under his protection in London will more likely give her time to find an ignorant, giddy, wealthy man that is not so careful as Mr Elliot.
