Mrs. Smith's reticence   Written by Kathryn Ann (10/28/2011 10:58 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Time to stir the pot on the ambivalence of Mrs Smith..., penned by jeffrey
Are you new?

I find it odd that in any of their previous meetings Mrs. Smith never once mentioned to Anne that she knew Mr. Elliot - even if it was to say: "I once knew a Mr. Elliot, I wonder if he might be a relation of yours?" or some such thing. She did not need to tell Anne all, but keeping from Anne for so long the fact that she knew him strikes me as odd.

Also a bit of a stretch to me that once she does tell all, the timing could not be better for Anne, and Anne believes her entirely.

I don't worry about the ambivalence (I tend to think it was as much being polite and civil not to bad-mouth others) as much as I have a hard time accepting the enormity of the coincidence that Mrs. Smith was such an intimate of Mr. Elliot's, knew so much to his disadvantage, and just happened to have a very damning letter of his!
