between Mr. Knightley's objection to FC and Anne's reservations about Mr. Elliot. The emphasis is that they both try to be agreeable to those around them on purpose in order to hide an ulterior motive. Characters like Bingley have no ulterior motive in their behavior to people- they are universally liked, but they don't don't go out of their way to try and make everyone like them.
