I always feel sorry for Mary actually, she has good reason to feel incredibly bored from time to time. Kids are not completely fulfilling in themselves, you know, especially as her husband so often ignores her and she is stuck practically living on top of her inlaws, ignored by her family apart from Anne. Everything she tries to do to perk herself up makes her seem selfish and mean because she scrambles for it so; no-one will take her swimming unless there is some extenuating circumstance to do with someone else. If Charles had simply taken her for her own sake to the seaside who knows, she might have balanced out immeasurably....
