That quotation makes me wonder somewhat uneasily just how intelligent and witty Lady Dalrymple (or I!) would have to be to gain JA's approval. Not all of us *can* be clever, but all of us can be polite and pleasant. IIRC, in P2, they turn LD into a real dragon, whereas in the novel, she's nice enough, just not very bright.
