A very good phrase to describe how they're acting! I agree this seems to be Anne's main problem with the acquaintance. She doesn't object to actually meeting them, but dislikes how much fanfare is made over knowing them.

"Had Lady Dalrymple and her daughter even been very agreeable, she would still have been ashamed of the agitation they created..." (Ch. 16)
