Must be Gibraltar - never even heard of Straits of Florida   Written by Cathy Allen (10/20/2011 12:25 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Comtemporary geography terms, penned by Stephanie
Are you new?

I've heard of the Straits of Gibraltar since grade school, and the British have a major port there. But "Straits of Florida?" Hopefully those who live in Florida know of it, but I wouldn't say it was COMMON geographical knowledge. I say this because I consider that I have COMMON geographical knowledge because I've had a life-long interest in geography, with a world-travelling-aunt who went EVERYWHERE you can imagine, took slide pictures to show us, and taught it in college. I think Dr. Shapard is correct, but I have no text to cite.

Also, as Cheryl said, the Mediterranean is FULL of places important to visit, ESPECIALLY in Regency times! Mrs. Croft would certainly have mentioned them if she had been there.
