...before Frederick ever saw her...

..because Frederick took no effort to see her in the eight years when he might have approached her, and when she could not approach him.

I see a great degree of coldness in his address to Anne, more so than to anyone else to whom he directs his correct manners. I do not see her rebuffing him, either at first, or in return.

Frederick might indeed be feeling deeply, but if we are discussing his manners vs. Anne's, his have an air of harshness, while hers speak to me of withdrawal. Neither encourages, but I know which I think is more hurtful.
