Love the Harvilles   Written by Cheryl (10/17/2011 1:27 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, The Harvilles (11 & 12), penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

Thanks for giving the Harvilles a shout out. They, like the Crofts, are another great naval couple. I meant to bring up this passage last week:

"He drew, he varnished, he carpentered, he glued; he made toys for the children, he fashioned new netting-needles and pins with improvements; and if every thing else was done, sat down to his large fishing-net at one corner of the room." (ch. 11)

My annotation has a note about how most navy men kept their hands busy and became adept at handicrafts during those long strecthes at sea and had a great anacedote about Jane's brother Frank:

In February 1807, Francis Austen helped with the furnishing of the Austen house in Southampton when he produced "a very nice fringe for the Drawingroom-Curtains." Later, Francis recognized that parts of Harville's character "were drawn from myself - at least some of his domestic habits, tastes, and occupations bear a strong resemblance to mine." (Austen, Letters, 123; Southam, 308)
