I don't know that Mary's complaining about how much room the Musgroves take up in their carriage is that cruel, though. To me, it's the same as the Crofts' saying that they would have room for four in their gig if they were all the same size as Anne - in other words, both statements are merely acknowledging the fact that a large person takes up more room than a small person.
