Admiral Croft   Written by Bridget D (10/16/2011 5:12 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, That's what I said in my second sentence., penned by Graciela
Are you new?

I'd imagine that Adm Croft did know of her good character as well and discovered more of it during their courtship, even if it was a a short one. But he is bound to affectionately emphasise that he had heard of her as a very pretty girl... No woman really wants her man to say that she just had a good character...

However I think that while in her earlier novels, Austen DID give her heroines a longer time to know and be knonw by their men, but in Persuasion she was more in favour of "backing your hunches" and marrying in a fairly short time..than she had been before. Anne and Fred didn't know each other that long during their initial courtship... yet they loved each other and wnated to marry.
