Excuse me for jumping in here! I've been lurking through this GR, since I haven't had the time to join in properly, but if there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that as a Preacher's Kid, JA grew up hearing all the various Bible stories. The expression may have been new at the time in other literature, but I'm sure that JA had that story at least partly in mind when she named Mrs. Clay!
