Are you new?

I never thought about this before, but Benwick is staying with the Harvilles. Perhaps he thinks (consciously or unconsciously) that it will show a lack of respect if he gets over his grief too soon. So he continues to show more pain than he really feels.

I'm not entirely convinced of this, but it would explain some of his actions.
