I agree, and will add that Anne is living in a society where her allowable behaviors are strictly defined. She is also encouraged to hide any of her stronger emotions, which might well mean staying silent and avoiding his gaze, if she feels that her voice might tremble, or her eyes show her pain.

She understands Frederick. Are you implying that he does not understand her?
