Their lack of communication is frustrating, but consider the following:

1. They have both been deeply hurt, and are afraid of reopening the wounds and experiencing that pain again, so they are trying to protect themselves.

2. They are not mind-readers, so they misinterpret each other's behaviour.

3. If they were communicating normally the narrative tension would dissolve and we would not have the pleasure of reading 'Persuasion'.

So hang in there Jeffrey - it may turn out to be worth the frustration in the end. ;-D
