Yes, I agree that Capt Wentworth needs a reality-checking smack on the face. But in defense of our hero, Anne hasn't been a paragon of inviting warmth either! Although her reticence is probably, in part, attributable to her personality type, she could use a well-timed swat herself with her less than warm-and-fuzzy encounters with Frederick. (Now donning helmet and ducking into foxhole)
