Good points, Stephanie!   Written by Ramya (10/11/2011 12:16 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, even in the midst of the serious anxiety, penned by Stephanie
Are you new?

I think there is a theme of people indulging in their sorrow, with the emphasis being on "indulging".

In Captain Benwick (Chap.11), we see another individual feeding his grief by constantly reading depressing poetry. Anne encourages him to read literature that would "rouse and fortify the mind by the highest precepts, and the strongest examples of moral and religious endurances."

We see Elinor exercising similar restraint in S&S and the contrast she provides with Marianne, who literally wallows in grief and self-pity.
