but Austen doesn't tell us what Anne told Frederick when she broke off the engagement. Don't you think that if she explained her feelings (how much she loved him but how hard it would be for him if they were married, etc.) that he would understand and tell her that he would come back for her??
From his comments quoted above, it would seem that she gave him the impression that she was only following her father and Lady R's guidance, as opposed to the truth, which was that she knew that it would be better for him if they were not married before he went to sea.
I never did understand that. Unless she broke it off completely and left him thinking there was no way she would ever marry him. I guess we'll never know.
