Are you new?

The most telling part of this quote to me is: "....Anne Elliot was not out of his thoughts...." Although Capt Wentworth and Sophia were conversing, it seems more like the omniscient Miss Austen cuts in here and adds this little tidbit herself, rather than being Sophia's thoughts. Can I get some help here?
