Mary is to be felt sorry for at times.


She has to try to gain the attention of her husband whose interest is focussed on hunting.
Perhaps that's the reason she impresses upon her 'position' so much to get some sort of attention which she thinks would not come otherwise.
Then again, using her position to get attention is exactly what is bringing the opposite result.

But still I do feel sorry for Mary which I don't for Elizabeth. At least 'she' needs Anne.
