I believe that Lady Russell rented Kellynch Lodge to be near her friend Lady Elliot after she became a widow, not that her late husband rented it from Sir Walter when he was still alive. As a widow, Lady Russell was well-provided for by her late husband, she had some money, but she appeared to be childless, so her late husband's landed estate was probably inherited by his relative e.g. a brother or nephew or cousin.
