Pretty much every list of self-help strategies for dealing with depression includes engaging in interests and activities, doing something to help someone else, physical exercise, and strategies for breaking obsessive patterns of thinking.

I'm not suggesting that either Mary or Elizabeth is clinically depressed, but with their empty, idle, self-centred habits they are doing themselves no good at all.
