Of course Austen did have quite a biting sense of humor which I usually enjoy, but this bit has never sat quite right with me. I think mostly because most of us are a bit squeamish about speaking ill of the dead, even if he is only a 'troublesome, hopeless' fictional character.

I'm hesitant to put this out there, but I wonder if the fact that Austen herself didn't have children made it somewhat easier for her to speak of a dead son as 'scarcely at all regretted.'
