We see that at the end of the day, Lady Russell wanted the retrenchment to be as painless as possible to Sir Walter and Elizabeth. If Sir Walter had adopted all of "regulations" of the plan that Lady Russell eventually proposed to him, it would have taken seven years to clear his debt. (Ch 2) Anne looked for more stringent cuts and an earlier release from the debt.
