Anne's comfort

in consequence of the missive, *Duplicate* copy, penned by BarbaraB
BarbaraB - you are right of course in pointing this out. Such a little thing, practically hidden in with a longer list of Anne's concerns, and yet I think it tells us much about Anne, as it appears she was the one (apparently the only one) making exertions to prepare the family for their removal from Kellynch and to prepare for the arrival of the tenants. What the purpose of this duplicate copy of books and pictures might be is a mystery to me. However, I would think that if it were for eventual accountability, the writing out of a copy of an existing document would fall to Mr. Shepherd or one of his employees to make a copy if it. That it is Anne making this effort leads me to believe it may be for her relief alone, as you note.
Interestingly to me, in accounting to Mary for how busy she has been, Anne also says: I have been several times in the garden with Mackenzie, trying to understand, and make him understand, which of Elizabeth's plants are for Lady Russell. I have had all my own little concerns to arrange, books and music to divide, and all my trunks to repack, from not having understood in time what was intended as to the waggons. It seems that not only has Elizabeth delegated her own concerns to Anne, Anne may also have been left in the dark concerning particulars of the move. I think her saying "from not having understood what was intended as to the waggons" probably masks the fact that no one bothered to inform her in the first place! At least Anne seems to be taking care to arrange her own books and music so that she will have what she wants with her in her exile from Kellynch. |
