...in frontier America from the settling of Jamestown in 1607 on. Even after we grew to the point of having large towns and cities that kept such records, it had become such a strong custom that my grandparents' families (deep South) maintained large Bibles to record such important events well into the late 20th century.

But I really don't know about the English situation. I seem to recall having read that the American custom was driven by our wilderness frontier situation, from which I inferred that it was unique to us; I'd be very interested in whether the English also did it, and for how long.
