Anne in society   Written by Nikki N (10/5/2011 4:47 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Very difficult!, penned by Erica M.
Are you new?

I think Lady R had treid to cheer Anne up by taking her to Bath soon after the break up, but unfortunately Anne decided that she disliked Bath and that it did not suit her. I think Anne probably refused to go to Bath if Lady R invited her again. Lady R then tried to get Anne to be included in the trips to London, but Elizabeth refused to take Anne -- chap 2 --

"Lady Russell, indeed, had scarcely any influence with Elizabeth ..... She had been repeatedly very earnest in trying to get Anne included in the visit to London, sensibly open to all the injustice and all the discredit of the selfish arrangements which shut her out, and on many lesser occasions had endeavoured to give Elizabeth the advantage of her own better judgment and experience; but always in vain".

Since Anne's society was so limited -- chap 4 --
"No second attachment, the only thoroughly natural, happy, and sufficient cure, at her time of life, had been possible to the nice tone of her mind, the fastidiousness of her taste, in the small limits of the society around them."

Charles Musgreve, who had proposed to Anne, and later married Mary after Anne's refusal is described as --
"civil and agreeable ... but not of powers, or conversation, or grace" that could attract Anne, though "Anne could believe, with Lady Russell, that ... a woman of real understanding might have given more consequence to his character, and more usefulness, rationality, and elegance to his habits and pursuits. As it was, he did nothing with much zeal, but sport; and his time was otherwise trifled away, without benefit from books, or any thing else".
