I think, as Rachel so aptly put it, FW is "confident, sanguine, and fearless" -- which may well be what drew Anne to him. But if he had a fiancee at home depending on him, would he feel like he couldn't take the same sorts of risks that he needed to succeed in his career? I think she thought she'd be an albatross to him.
