Perhaps she had some unaccountable bias in favour of beauty? I believe it has been known to afflict women as well as men. ;-D

The strict 18th century 'rules of engagement' could well have prevented her from discovering his flaws until it was too late.

Plus I don't suppose the fact that he was a Baronet would have done him any harm with young ladies or their Mamas.
